De Overlander / The Overlander

Na drie dagen in Wellington hebben we de Northern Explorer naar Auckland genomen. Een treinreis die de hele dag duurt, maar waarmee je in gebieden van het Noordereiland komt, waar je met de auto niet of alleen maar via een flinke omweg kan komen. 't Was wel redelijk vroeg op, want de shuttlebus zou ons al om 7 uur oppikken. De trein zou 7.55 vertrekken, dus we hadden geen andere keus als we wilden voorkomen dat we ons echt moesten haasten.
After three days in Wellington we took the Northern Explorer to Auckland. This is a journey by train taking all day to get you from Wellington to Auckland, but it is the only way to get to certain areas of the Northern Island where you can't get by car of only via a detour. It did mean getting up early as the train departed at 7.55 and we needed to check in no later then .730. But it also meant we didn't have to rush it. After all, this is a sabbatical, right ;-)

Uiteindelijk kwamen we na een prachtige reis met zo'n  minuten vertraging aan in Auckland, waar we met een taxi snel op weg gingen naar ons volgende logeeradres. 't Was alles bij elkaar toch best een lange dag geweest.

Wellington

Hoi allemaal,
Hi all

Uiteindelijk zijn we dus toch veilig in Wellington aangekomen, waar we al snel de shuttlebus naar de jeugdherberg hadden gevonden. Na het inchecken heerlijk ons mandje ingedoken en lekker een paar uurtjes getukt voordat we Wellington gingen ontdekken.
In the end we did get to Wellingtong without any further problems.  The shuttlebus dropped us of at the hostel soon enough and after checking in we went to bed to get some slepp.The next day was all about getting around in Wellington.

Het kostte enige moeite, die hop on hop off bus. We hadden er genoeg gedaan om te weten hoe het werkt, althans dat dachten we ;-) Andere keren was het een kwestie van naar de halte lopen en dan bij de chauffeur een kaartje kopen. Helaas, in Wellington werkt het anders....Daar moet je dus bellen en heel specifiek aangeven hoe laat je bij welke halte staat, zodat de chauffeur weet dat hij daar passagiers moet oppikken. Daar kwamen we pas achter toen we tevergeefs op zoek naar een halte waren geweest ;-)
It took some effort to catch a hop on hop off buss We thought we knew the drill, having taken it quite often in other cities. However, Wellington had a different take on the hoho buss. After looking for a bus sto in vain, we found out you need to call them and tell them at what time the driver can pick you up at which stop. Yeah right, we hadn't figured that one out ;-) But in the end we managed to get a hoho buss and enjoyed Wellington immensely:

We hebben die dag lekker genoten en aparte plekken van Wellington gezien waaronder de studio's van Peter Jackson, de regisseur van Lord of the Rings en de Hobbit. Tja, en dan ben je in Welllington waar veel van het regisseren van de film is gedaan en dan is deel 2 van de Hobbit net in premiere gegaan en dan is er op loopafstand van het hostel een prachtige oude bioscoop waar deel 2 in 3D wordt vertoond. Wat doe je dan? Juist!
We enjoyed the day very much, seeing all the interesting places of Wellington, amongst which is the studio and post production offices of Peter Jackson, the director of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.
And then you are in Wellingotn and then part 2 of the Hobbit (the desolation of Smaug) has just been released and then there is a great old cinema literally just across the road of your hostel. So what are you gonna do? YEP!

Het werd een latertje, maar ach, gelijk een mooie remedie tegen de jetlag. Daar hebben we dus mooi totaal geen last van gehad!
It was a long day in the end, but that's just a perfect remedy against jetlag. Just one thing, we never had any ;-)

Stress!

En toen hadden we op onze laatste dag in Australie toch nog stress!
And then, on our last day in Australia, we did get stressed!

Wat was het geval? Ruim op tijd in Perth voor onze vlucht naar Sydney, waar we zouden overstappen op onze vlucht naar Wellington. 65 minuten was meer dan genoeg tijd was ons verzekerd. Ja ja...
What was the case? With plenty of time to make our flight to Sydney we arrived at the airport of Perth. 65 minutes was more then enough to change planes in Sydney. Right....

Keurig op tijd geland in Sydney, de shuttlebus naar de internationale luchthaven hadden we mooi op tijd en de douane leverde ook al geen problemen op. Maar toen!
Arrived right on schedule in Sydney, no problems catching the shuttleservice to the international airport of Sydney and even customs wasn't a problem. But then!

Toen moesten we nog door de bagagecontrole. Met maar heel kleine bakjes om al je spullen in te doen hadden we geloof ik wel negen van die bakjes:
- schoenen? Check.
- laptoptas? Check.
- laptop? Check.
- fototassen? Check.
- jassen? Check.
- rugzakje? Eeeeeh, rugzakje???
Then there was just one more hurdle, AKA baggage check. As there were only very small trays available, we had about 9 trays filled with our stuff:
- shoes? Check.
- laptop bag? Check.
- laptop? Check.
- camerabags? Check.
- bagpack? Eeeeeh, bagpack?????

Het rugzakje was apart gezet, kennelijk toch iets verdachts gezien. Maar als je nou dacht dat er dan meteen actie ondernomen wordt, jammer maar helaas. Het heeft daar wel tien minuten gestaan voordat het nog eens een keer door de röntgen ging. En toen gingen de toilettassen nog een keer apart. En ondertussen hadden we nog maar 10 minuten voordat onze vlucht zou vertrekken. Mijn bloeddruk begon toch wat op te lopen ;-)
The bagpack had been sidetracked, apparently something suspicious was seen when checking it. But don't you think it got checked out quickly! It was standing there for at least 10 minutes before X-raying it again. And then the toiletry bags got checked separately. In the meanwhile our flight would depart within 10 minutes. My bloodpressure was starting to rise a little bit ;-)

Uiteindelijk werd Edwins toilettas geopend en gecontroleerd. De deo geen enkel probleem, andere dingen ook niet maar de pot scheercreme die tevoorschijn kwam, tja, dat kon toch echt niet. De inhoud daarvan was veel te groot! En dan te bedenken dat die zonder enig probleem op Schiphol en Dubai in de handbagage was meegegaan...
In the end Edwins toiletry bag was checked. Deodorant, no problem, other items, no problem. But the shaving creme, that jar was apparently way too big for carry-on luggage. Remember, both at Schiphol Airport and Dubai it was allowed without a second thought!

Onze namen werden al omgeroepen met daarbij de mededeling dat we de vlucht vertraagden toen we na inlevering van de scheercreme door mochten. We zijn letterlijk met wapperende jaspanden naar de gate gesneld, die dan natuurlijk altijd het verst weg is, Murphy's wet en zo ;-) We hebben het gehaald, maar wat mij betreft bepaald niet voor herhaling vatbaar!
We were already being announced as the persons delaying the flight when we were allowed to go (of course after handing in the shaving creme that is). We sort of made a run for it, but naturally your gate is then the one the furthest away, Murhpy's law kicking in....We made it (barely!); as far as I am concerned a rerun is not required!

Albany

Hoi allemaal,
Hi all,

Dit is het laatste bericht betreffende Australie  Vier weken lijkt zo lang, maar voor je het weet ben je weer op weg naar Perth om door te vliegen naar Nieuw Zeeland......
This will be our last post regarding Australia. Four weeks sounds like a very long period, but before you know it, you are on your way to the airport to fly out to New Zealand...

We waren van plan om Albany en Denmark op één dag te doen, maar dat liep wat anders (goh, waarom is dat nou niet bijzonder voor ons?!?). Omdat Albany vanaf de camping het verst weg was (circa 1½ uur rijden) besloten we daar te beginnen en dan op de terugweg Denmark te bezoeken. En toen zaten we heerlijk met een kop espresso/soya moccha te bespreken wat we wilden gaan doen toen we ineens dit zagen:
We planned on doing Albany and Denmark on one day but in the end things went a little bit different (really??? No kidding???) Since Albany was the furthest away (about 1½ hours driving) we decided to go to Albany first and then work our way back to the campsite, visiting Denmark and such. And then we were enjoying our espresso/soy moccha when all of a sudden we saw this:

Een heuse motoroptocht! Het waren er echt honderden! Soms wisten we gewoon niet waar we moesten kijken, zo bijzonder waren sommige motoren en/of de rijders. Toen we in gesprek raakten met iemand hierover bleek dit een jaarlijks evenement te zijn, dus dat was wel mazzel dat we uitgerekend die dag in Albany waren. 's Ochtends was het dan een grote parade en 's middags werden er kennelijk verzoekritten van kinderen e.d. gedaan. Echt zooooo gaaf om te zien!
A real motorbiker's parade! There were literally hundreds of them! Sometimes we just didn't know where to look, that's how special some of them were. When talking about this with a 'local', we found out this is an annual event, lucky us ;-) In the morning they would have their parade and then in the afternoon they were granting requests of kids for bikerides etc.

Edwin was naar het station geweest om te fotograferen (uiteraard...) en daar ook de VVV even binnengelopen. Op aanraden van hen zijn we toen lekker gaan toeren in en om Albany wat de volgende foto's opleverde:
Edwin had been to the railway station to take some pictures of freight trains (no surprise there... ) and on his way there visited the Visitor Centre for some tips. That resulted in us touring in and around Albany, ending up with some lovely pictures:

Uiteindelijk hebben we dus de hele dag bij Albany doorgebracht, zo veel was er daar te zien. Weer een heerlijke dag om op terug te kijken! Die vier weken Australie zijn werkelijk omgevlogen....

Hi all, 

Inmiddels veilig in Wellington gearriveerd (daarover in een andere post meer) en zoals beloofd nu dus een post met wat achterstallig onderhoud (volgens Edwin is het meer achterstallig internet ;-)  met een flink aantal foto`s:
Arrived safely in Wellington (more about that in another post), so as promised a post with a lot of pictures that are way overdue! Edwin blaims it on the internet, not willing to cooperate ;-)

Na het weekend in Perth zijn we afgezakt naar de Margaret River Valley (in het zuidwesten van Australie) waarbij we onderweg een stop hebben gemaakt in Cape Naturaliste:

Als je goed kijkt zie je her en der zeeleeuwen, o.a. voor die uiteenspattende golf en in het water ;-)
If looking carefully, you should be able to see sealions. There's one in front of the breaching wave as well as one in the water (and a few more.. ;-)
 

Wat we daar ook veel, heeeel veeeel, hebben gezien zijn vliegen! Werkelijk O-VER-AL! Helaas is de foto die ik van Edwins rug heb gemaakt niet scherp, het waren er echt honderden....
Something not exactly lacking there are flies! They are EVERY-WHERE! Unfortunately the picture I took showing them on Edwin´s back is out of focus, otherwise you would have counted hundreds of them and I am not kidding you!

Verder zijn we ook nog naar het meest zuidwestelijk puntje van Australie geweest, Cape Leeuwin, waar we uiteraard ook weer de nodige foto's hebben gemaakt. Hier was er zelfs een complete tour met audiogids beschikbaar. Erg leuk om op die manier wat meer over de geschiedenis van dit stukje te weten te komen (zei de geschiedenisfreak ;-):
We also went to the most southwestern tip of Australia, Cape Leeuwin, where of course we made a lot of pics. Here you can listen to an audioguided tour in which the history of this lighthouse and its personnel is explained more. Really interesting (according to the history freak that is):

De zuidelijke oceaan en de Indische oceaan ontmoeten elkaar, wat met nogal wat rumoer gepaard gaat ;-)

En dan ook nog het nodige geweld op de kust!
Apart from all the noise also some pretty big waves hitting the shores!



Kortom, weer genoeg mooie dingen gezien :-D In een volgende post verhalen over ons laatste uitstapje in Australie alvorens via Perth en Sydney door te reizen naar Nieuw Zeeland!
All in all we have done enough site seeing in the south western part of Australia. In the next post more on our last day there before travelling onwards to New Zealand via Perth and Sydney!

Perth en Margaret River / Perth and Margaret River

Hoi allemaal,
Hi all,

Jippie, eindelijk weer internet! Internet is hier een redelijk drama, als het er al is is het ontzettend traaaaaaag :-(( Nu in Albany bij een koffietentje eindelijk weer redelijk snel internet, dus daar maken we gelijk goed gebruik van!
Yeah, finally internet again! WiFi  is pretty much a disaster, even if available, it is so slooooooow! So, sitting in the sun, sipping on a great coffee, this place is offering pretty decent WiFi and we are taking advantage of it!

Dus, waar waren we gebleven? O ja, in Cervantes en the Pinnacles (in een volgende post gaan we heeeel veel foto's plaatsen!). Daarna zijn we naar Perth gegaan waar Edwin op zondag achter de treintjes is aangegaan en een treinmuseum heeft bezocht. Ik ben lekker op de campng gebleven, beetje lezen, wasje gedaan, niks bijzonders dus.
So, where were we? Oh right, Cervantes and the Pinnacles (a whole lot of pictures in the next post, I promise!). After Cervantes we drove down to Perth for the weekend. On Sunday Edwin took off to see trains and visit the Railway Museum. I stayed at the campsite, reading a bit, doing some laundry. In other words, nothing spectacular, just a nice relaxing day.

Vanuit Perth zijn we verder naar het zuiden gegaan, richting de Margaret River Valley (ja ja, ik weet het, HET gebied voor goede wijnen, lekker eten, precies in ons straatje dus ;-)  We hebben inderdaad ook een tripje met wijnproeverijen, een likeurstokerij, kaas- en chocoladeproeverij om het geheel vervolgens af te ronden met een bierproeverij. *HIPS*

From Perth we drove down further to the south into the Margaret River Valley. No need to point out the obvious, it's all aboout good wines and great foods, which is just up our alley ;-) We did book a daytrip to do some wine tasting, visit a liqueur place, taste some cheeses and chocolate, only to finish it off with a beer tasting.... *HIPS*
